What we do
Look at the facts and the dates
We go through what happened, your documents and how long you have. A strong claim filed too late usually can't go ahead.
Draft and file
We prepare the claim, or your Defence, along with a claim back against the other side if you have one.
Serve the documents
A claim has to be served on the person you're suing before it can go anywhere. We take care of it.
The settlement conference
Every defended case has a settlement conference, a meeting with a judge where both sides try to resolve it before trial. Many cases settle here.
Trial
If it doesn't settle, we prepare your documents and witnesses and represent you at trial.
Getting paid
A judgment doesn't always mean a cheque arrives. We can collect it for you.
Can't find the person you're suing? Laura is also a licensed private investigator, and finding people is part of what she has done for years.

Questions people ask
What happens if I miss the 20 days?
The person suing you can ask the court to note you in default, and for a debt they can get judgment without a hearing. If that happens, call us quickly. You can ask the court to set it aside, and it helps to act fast.
My claim is worth more than $50,000. What are my options?
You can give up the amount over $50,000 and stay in Small Claims Court, which is simpler and faster. Otherwise the case belongs in the Superior Court of Justice, where paralegals can't represent you.
If the court decides in my favour, do I get my costs back?
Often in part. The court can order the other side to pay some of your costs, within limits set by the court's rules. Laura explains those limits in What are costs in Small Claims Court?
Which court do I file in?
Usually where the problem happened or where the person you're suing lives or does business. That may be Guelph, or another court in Ontario.
